The region is heavily forested with the northern edge being bordered by Lake Superior. There are several rivers and crystal clear lakes in the region. In the winter, the area is one of the best snowmobiling destinations in the nation. The low population of the area makes it a great place to spend some uninterrupted time alone or with family.

Northwoods Wisconsin is a great place to enjoy outdoor activities. The Bois Brule river is excellent for trout fishing. Canoeing and kayaking are also popular on Lake Superior and the many rivers in the region. For an interesting vacation, try boating and camping at the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. You can catch a ferry out to some of the islands or you can take your own boat out there. There are also many area shipwrecks in depths starting at 8 feet, making some wrecks accessible to snorklers.
