Lake Erie Shore Recreation
Cassadaga Creek, Chadakoin River and the Marden-Cobb Waterways provide world class canoeing and kayaking. Those wanting a leisurely ride can take a steamboat on the Chautauqua Belle or a dinner cruise on the Summer Wind. Golf at world-class courses throughout the county in the spring, summer and fall or ski on some of the best snow in the U.S. in the winter. Go birding or hiking. Take a hot air balloon ride over scenic rolling hills and spend a leisurely afternoon on a nature walk through the glacier rock park at Panama Rocks. Enjoy the local wines as you drive the 20-mile long Chautauqua Wine Trail, centered along Route 20 on the Lake Erie shoreline, the largest grape growing region in the East. Don't forget to stop for the local maple syrup or try some fine New York cheeses. If art is what you are looking for visit the Chautauqua Institution, a gated Victorian retreat, which offers programs in art, culture, education and religion. The Lucy-Desi Museum and the Reg Lenna Civic Center in Jamestown and the 1891 Fredonia Opera House also offer great entertainment. If you love the outdoors visit Allegany County's Hanging Bog Keeney Swamp, the beaver dam system at Alma Pond, Moss Lake and the designated wetlands of Andover-Ponds where visitors can view nature at its finest. Alleghany County is great for camping in tents or RV's alike. There are designated wildlife areas, hiking trails, boating, canoeing on the Genesee River, scenic plane rides, horseback riding, snowmobiling, cross country skiing, bicycle tours, back-packing and much more! If you like hunting and fishing you will love the twenty-three state forests covering 46,307 acres and 2,050 acres of county forests. Large populations of white-tailed deer, turkeys, bear and small game for the hunter, and trout and bass for the fisherman.
