Southwest Michigan
|
Southwest Michigan is most popular for its many miles of sand beaches along Lake Michigan. This part of the state is less developed than the southeast side, with Grand Rapids, Muskegon and Kalamazoo being the only metropolitan areas of any size. Visitors can enjoy fine dining, great beaches and spectacular sunsets over Lake Michigan. The Eastern shore of Lake Michigan features many great sand dunes for hiking and exploring.

Fishing and boating are popular activities on the west side of Lower Michigan. Sportfishing charters can be found at nearly every harbor, and boaters are always seen out on the water. If off-road vehicles interests you, head north of Muskegon to the Silver Lake area, the only place in the state where off road vehicles are allowed on sand dunes. Don't have an off road vehicle? That's all right, you can rent a jeep and drive through the dunes with it. Those who want to see the dunes but don't want to drive themselves can ride on the dunes tour ride. During the winter and early spring the steelhead fishing on the Grand River is excellent. Try the 6th street dam in Grand Rapids or along the mouth of the river at Grand Haven.
