Southeast Michigan
The Detroit Skyline from Belle Isle - Photo Courtesy of U.S. EPA Great Lakes National Program Office Southeast Michigan is dominated by the Detroit and Flint metro areas. The "thumb" area of the region is mostly farms, but has some waterfront towns along Saginaw Bay and Lake Huron. Port Huron, located on the southern end of Lake Huron, is one of the best spots. The city is smaller than most in the area, and still depends on tourist dollars. South of Detroit, the region runs along Lake Erie. Tourism is beginning to pick up again around Lake Erie. Interesting towns to visit are Frankenmuth, Michigan's "German" town, Dearborn, home of Henry Ford and the automobile, and Detroit.
