Outdoor sports are the predominant Northwest Michigan form of recreation. The area offers several excellent mountain bike trails for all skill levels. Try Sand Lakes Quiet Area for a nice relaxing ride, or go to the VASA singletrack and test out your technical skills.
Try the Crystal or Platte rivers for some kayaking/canoeing fun or if you want to test out your endurance, try kayaking out on Lake Michigan. The area's many small lakes are good for catching Bluegill, Bass and Walleye, while Grand Traverse Bay and Lake Michigan are better at producing Lake Trout and big Browns. There are guide services out of almost every harbor in the region.
Boaters will enjoy cruising Grand Traverse Bay, the Antrim County Chain of Lakes and Lake Charlevoix. For those with access to a larger boat and who are willing to tolerate possible rough seas, the Lake Michigan Archipelago of islands are a nice place to spend a secluded vacation. There are also countless places to hike and camp in the area. Try one of the many state parks if you want some of the comforts of home (electricity and plumbing), or try North Manitou island for a true wilderness experience.
In the winter, look for some good snowmobiling, skiing and ice fishing action. There are snowmobile trails all over the region, with many counties allowing snowmobilers right of way on road shoulders. Downhill skiing is great at resorts such as Crystal Mountain, Shanty Creek and Sugar Loaf and don't forget cross country skiing at such places as the famous Vasa Trail. Ice fishing is great on any number of inland lakes and the Grand Traverse Bays.
