Northeast Michigan
|
Northeast Michigan, known as the "Sunrise Side", runs along Lake Huron from Bay City all the way up to Mackinaw City. The area is generally less populated and less expensive than the northwest region, popular activities center around golf, fishing and boating. The northeast region tends to have a much slower pace than the rest of the lower peninsula, making for a relaxing stay. The region shys away from the big, glamorous resorts of the western side of the state, instead opting for smaller motels, resorts and campgrounds.

There's plenty to do on your Northeast Michigan vacation. If golf is your passion, there are plenty of courses. Try The Dream in West Branch, or The Gailes at the Lakewood Shore Resort in Oscoda. If fishing's more your style, there are many spots to wet a line. Try the AuSable and Rifle rivers for trout, Hubbard Lake for bass, pike and bluegill, Saginaw Bay for walleye, or take a boat out on Thunder Bay and Lake Huron for some bigger trout and salmon. Boaters enjoy cruising Saginaw Bay's Charity Islands, the inland waterway in Cheboygan, the Tawas Bay area and Alpena. Canoeing and kayaking are popular on the AuSable River, while tubing is the name of the game on the Rifle River. Snowmobiling is the primary winter sport around northeast Michigan.
